1. Mechs are one of the favorite subjects of concept artists. I’m fascinated by the idea of huge anthropoid and walking machines as well, but I think the most common conception of such machines as giant humanoids is out of the realm of possibility. Our  body plan works for us, but the technical difficulty of building human-shaped vehicles for use in traversing rough terrain would limit their feasibility. Instead, the shape of actual mechs of the not-so-distant future (and I’m fairly confident they will exist, given current programs by DARPA and other groups) will be driven primarily by function. Thus, they are more likely to resemble insects, quadrupeds, and other non-human walkers. The renderings I’ve chosen try to reflect that. While they are still fanciful, I believe element of what these artists have imagined may manifest in actual technology during our lifetime.
